Allen Wolak has seen more than his fair share of tragedies involving children during the past

five years.

As a private investigator working with the Indiana Division of Family and Children, it is Wolak’s job to respond to child abuse reports that are received at night and during the weekends.

His background with child abuse led to an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey television show that will be shown next week.

“Children are often burned, neglected and beaten up,” said the private detective, who has a state contract to investigate child abuse in 10 Indiana counties, including Lake.

Wolak stressed that child abusers don’t fit any profile, but increasingly youngsters are being victimized by their mother’s boyfriends.

“Sometimes mothers close their eyes to what’s going on because they’re scared or think the boyfriend is going to leave them,” said Wolak, a Crown Point resident whose detective agency A.R. Wolak, is based in Highland.

Wolak said appearing on national television was a bit scary, but “if it prevents one child from getting hurt, then it’s worth it.”
